How to Cram for a Test: What Actually Works in the Window You Have
Cramming has a bad reputation, and most of that reputation is earned.
But a two-day cram is a different animal from skipping the semester,
and the difference is worth naming, because it is the difference
between recovering a fair chunk of a test and recovering almost
nothing. A two-day cram with a deliberate sequence recovers more
than most students give it credit for. A two-day cram done by
re-reading the notes and hoping something sticks recovers about
the same amount as sleep and luck.
The difference is not effort. It is sequence. This page is about
the sequence, and the three moves that make a short window
actually do something instead of perform it.
The first hour is the only hour that really matters
Most people spend the first hour of a cram the same wrong way,
and then blame the whole window on what comes after. The first
hour decides what the next several hours are for, and if you
spend it on chapter three, you have spent it on the material
you already know best, and the rest of the window drifts with
that early choice.
The first hour should be spent on the exam itself. The list of
topics the professor says will appear. The syllabus line about
what the course is "about." The assignment sheet clause about
what they expect you to be able to do by this point. Whatever
the smallest, most specific description of the scope is, that
is the work for the first hour.
The reason a cram without a scope fails is that a cram of
everything is a skip of everything. You cannot give twelve
topics an equal thirty minutes each, and thirty minutes is not
enough to learn any of them on a compressed schedule. A cram
with a scope is a cram of the five or six things that carry
the most of the grade, and six things in an evening is enough
to recover the bulk of what a weak week cost you.

The three moves, and the order they have to happen in
The three moves are not three equal slices of the week. They are
a sequence, and the order matters more than any single move.
Move one, the recovery pass. Go through your old problem
sets and old exams from this semester, not to re-solve them
but to re-identify them. For each problem, can you name the
concept in two words without looking? If yes, move on. If no,
write the concept down. By the end of the pass you have a list,
and the list is shorter than your anxiety suggested, because you
actually know more than you felt you did. That list is the real
scope for the rest of the window.
Move two, the gap pass in order of cost. Do not work the gap
list alphabetically. Work it by which mistake would cost the most
points. A miss on a concept that shows up in four out of ten
problems is more expensive than a miss on one that shows up
in a single problem, so the leverage order is the one that
recovers the most of the test in the time you have.
Move three, the generation pass. Close the notes and write
the three or four concepts you are least sure of, from memory.
Not an essay. Just the two-word name, then the step after it,
then the next step, until the chain is out on the page. This

The three moves on one real topic, so the sequence is visible
The abstract version of the sequence is easy to nod at and hard to
hold under pressure. Here it is applied to a single topic from an
intermediate physics course, because watching the three moves land
on one specific thing is where the shape actually makes sense.
The topic: Newton's second law in the form F = ma, with a
non-constant force.
Scope, first. Is this on the exam? If the exam covers dynamics
and the syllabus lists "force, mass, and acceleration" as a
first unit, then yes, this is in scope, and any of the moves
below are worth spending time on. If the exam does not
cover dynamics, you have found a whole block of the gap list
that is not actually a gap, and that is scope paying
for itself in hour one.
Recovery pass on the topic. From your old problem sets:
can you name what happens to a when you double F with
m fixed? Can you name what happens to F when the force
is the result of a spring and you double the displacement?
Can you name the unit on the left side of the equation?
Each of those is a two-word test, and the ones you
failed are the gap items for this topic, and the ones
you passed are not gaps and should not be on your gap list.
Gap pass on the topic, in cost order. If the non-constant
force version shows up in the exam, it probably shows up
in a problem worth more than the constant-force version,
because instructors save the harder version for the
worse-misconception point. That is the cost order, and
that is why the non-constant-force gap is worked before
the constant-force gap.
Generation pass on the topic. Close the notes. Write
the derivation from momentum conservation to F = ma,
in your own two-word steps. You will find, in the second
step or the third step, a gap that looked fine in
the recovery pass and is not fine on the page. That
is the point of the generation pass on a single
topic, and it is the kind of gap a tool can find
on your chain if you write it out first and then
ask the tool to check it.
The whole thing took less than an hour on one topic,
and it produced a map of exactly where that topic
stands, which is more useful than re-reading
the chapter and feeling like you did
something. The sequence is
the reason.
The order exists because each move is the input to the next
Each move produces the material the next move works on, and that
is why skipping one breaks the rest.
If you skip the recovery pass and go straight to the gap pass,
you are prioritizing a scope you never verified, and the scope
is probably wrong, so you spend the middle of the window on
material you already had. If you skip the gap pass and go
straight to generation, you are writing out the concepts you
remember best, because those are the ones that come to mind,
and you have not touched the ones that actually tripped you.
The order is not a suggestion. It is the wiring.
What a tool helps with in a cram, and where it does not
A tool is not useful in the recovery pass, because that pass
is you, looking at your own past work and naming what you
remember. A tool is not useful in the gap pass, because the
prioritization depends on your own sense of cost, which is
something you know and the tool does not.
A tool is useful in the generation pass, and only there, and

The two mistakes that do most of the damage
They are not "not enough time" and "not enough material,"
because both of those are excuses for a plan that could
otherwise be sound. They are "no scope" and "no order."
A cram with no scope is a skip of everything. A cram with no
order is a hop across everything. Both of them look like
effort, which is exactly how they stay hidden until the
grade comes back.
A concrete two-day version, end to end
Day one, hour one. Scope. Read the exam description, the
syllabus, the assignment sheet. Write the five or six things
that actually carry this test. An hour of scope is worth a day
of hoping.
Day one, hours two to six. Recovery pass, using the scope
as the filter. Work your old problem sets and old exams through
the "can I name this in two words" test. Write the gap list.
If it is longer than ten items, the scope was too loose.
Day one, hours seven to nine. Gap pass, in cost order. Work
from the most expensive miss to the least. For each gap, write
the two-word name and the one step you have not actually
learned in the chain. That is enough. You do not need to solve
it, you need to find the hole.
Day two, hours one to four. Generation pass. Close the notes.
Write out each gap's chain from memory. Ask a tool to find the
weakest link in what you wrote. Work the three you are least
sure of, in cost order again.
Day two, hours five to seven. Second generation pass, same
gaps, but starting the chain from a different point. It should
come out cleaner than the first attempt, because the first
attempt found the weak links and you have had time to close
them.
Day two, hour eight. No new material. Write out the three
concepts you feel most solid on and the three you feel least
solid on. The first set should come out clean. The second set
will show you exactly where you stand, and that is more useful
than any amount of hope was worth.
What a cram is not
A cram is not the place where you finally understand the material
that three weeks of half-attention skipped. That is a different
project with a different clock, and calling it a cram sets you
up to blame the two days for the three weeks. A cram recovers
the gap between what you know and what the exam assumes you
know. It does not close the gap between what you know and what
you should have known all term.
That distinction is worth holding, because it is what keeps the
cram honest about what it can do. If you go in expecting to
turn a D into a low C and get a clear map of what you still do
not know, the cram is succeeding on its own terms, and the map
is the piece that survives the test.
The questions people are actually asking
Should I cram from my notes or from the textbook?
Your notes, if they are yours and if they are reasonably
complete. The textbook is a slower route to the same material,
and in a short window your notes are the higher-leverage source
because they are already shaped the way you organized them, and
the recovery pass works better on material in your own format.

One long day or two shorter days?
Two shorter days, almost always. The generation pass depends on
a gap between the first write-out and the second, and that gap
is where the chain actually settles. One long day collapses the

Sleep or more study on the last night?
Sleep. A cram is built on the generation pass, and the
generation pass is built on a clear enough head to write a chain
out cleanly. A tired head writes the chain and the chain looks
right on the page and it is the wrong chain, and you will not
have the energy to catch it.
Is this the same thing spaced repetition should have done all term?
It is the emergency version of the same idea. Spaced repetition
runs the chain many times over many weeks so it never goes cold.
A cram runs the chain twice in two days because it went cold and
you are catching it on the way down. The first is better, and the
second is still better than re-reading a highlighter job.
Bottom line
A cram is not a sprint on effort, it is a sequence on recovery.
The sequence is scope, recovery, gap, generation, with each
move producing the input for the next. A tool earns its place
