Chat with PDF

Upload your textbook. Ask it questions. Study from the answers..

Upload PDFs — textbook chapters, lecture slides, papers — and chat over them with answers grounded in the document itself. Highlight, extract the high-yield material, and generate flashcards and quizzes straight from the source.

Document upload is a premium feature

How it works

01

Upload the document

PDFs upload and process in the background — text is extracted and indexed so the AI can cite what the document actually says rather than what it vaguely remembers about the topic.

02

Ask questions against the source

"What does chapter 4 say about enzyme inhibition?" gets answered from your chapter 4 — which matters when your professor tests the textbook's framing, not the internet's.

03

Read with the viewer, not around it

A built-in PDF viewer with highlights keeps you in the document. Chat-over-document is for interrogating the text, not for skipping the reading entirely.

04

Generate review material from it

Flashcards and quizzes generated from a document inherit its precision — the card says what your assigned text says.

Where it shines

  • Dense textbook chapters where you need the high-yield 20%
  • Lecture slide decks that are outlines of what you're actually tested on
  • Course readers and papers where the professor tests specific framing
  • Studying from PDFs on the go via the mobile apps

What it won't do

  • This is a premium feature — document upload isn't on the free plan. If you're not sure Fennie is for you, start with the free unlimited chat and upgrade when you need documents.
  • Scanned image-only PDFs extract poorly. Native-text PDFs work best.
  • Chat-over-document is a comprehension tool, not a reading substitute. If you never open the reading, you're studying summaries of a book you haven't met — that gap shows up on exams.
  • Very long documents are indexed in chunks; for a precise citation on a specific page, point the question at that section.

Free vs premium, plainly

On the free plan

  • Manual notes summarizing your readings
  • 3 AI generations per day from notes and chats

Premium adds

  • PDF upload with background text extraction
  • Chat grounded in your documents
  • In-app PDF viewer with highlights

Frequently asked questions

Is chat-with-PDF free?

No — document upload is premium. We'd rather say that plainly than get you three clicks deep before a paywall. What is free: unlimited chat, unlimited manual notes, and three AI generations a day. That's enough to know whether you like how Fennie works before paying anything.

What file types work?

PDF is the primary format and the best-supported one. Native-text PDFs (exported from a computer) extract cleanly; photographed or scanned pages are hit-or-miss because there's no text layer to extract.

Does it actually cite the document, or just answer from general knowledge?

Answers are grounded in the extracted text of your upload — that's the point of uploading rather than just asking in plain chat. For material outside the document, it says so rather than pretending the document covered it.

How is this different from free 'chat with PDF' sites?

Free PDF-chat sites do one thing: Q&A over a file. Fennie connects the document to the rest of your studying — flashcards and quizzes generated from it, notes linked to it, and a Daily Plan that schedules the review. If all you ever need is one-off Q&A over a file, a free single-purpose site may be enough.
