FIU ACG 2021: Accounting for Decisions

ACG 2021 is FIU's introductory financial accounting course — the accounting equation, the recording cycle, financial statements, and how to read what the numbers say about a business. It's a gateway into FIU's large business school and the first course where business stops being talk and becomes ledgers.

Fennie is independent and not affiliated with Florida International University. This is an unofficial study guide.

What makes it hard

Accounting is cumulative in a way intro courses usually aren't: debits and credits from week two are load-bearing in week ten, so a soft start compounds into a hard semester. The mechanics also resist intuition at first — why a debit increases an asset but decreases revenue feels arbitrary until the system clicks, and the click only comes from working transactions, not reading about them.

What you'll cover

  • The accounting equation
  • Debits, credits, and journal entries
  • The accounting cycle and adjusting entries
  • Income statement and balance sheet
  • Statement of cash flows basics
  • Internal controls and ethics

The ACG 2021 study guide

How to study for FIU ACG 2021, step by step.

  1. 1

Drill debits and credits until they're reflexes

Every later topic stands on this. Daily five-minute drills in the first three weeks — account type, normal balance, increase or decrease — buy back hours in week ten.

  2. 2

Work transactions by hand, in volume

Accounting clicks through the wrist: journalize, post, and trace each transaction to the statements. Reading worked examples builds recognition; producing entries builds the grade.

  3. 3

Reconstruct the statements from a trial balance

Practice building the income statement and balance sheet from raw account data. Exams test the full pipeline, and assembling it yourself reveals which links are weak.

  4. 4

Never let a week of confusion ride

ACG 2021 compounds — confusion in adjusting entries becomes disaster by the cash flow unit. Same-week repair, via office hours or tutoring, is the cheapest fix available.

FAQ

Is ACG 2021 hard at FIU?

It's the business core's first real filter — not because the math is hard (it's arithmetic) but because the system is cumulative and unintuitive until it clicks. Students who drill mechanics weekly find it very passable; late starters fight the compounding.

Do all FIU business majors take ACG 2021?

Yes — it's foundational to the business core, followed by managerial accounting, and a prerequisite gateway into upper-division business coursework. Accounting majors and everyone else alike start here.

How do I study for ACG 2021 exams?

Work transactions by hand in volume — journalize, post, adjust, and build statements from trial balances. The exams test production, not recognition, and the only path to production is reps. An hour of entries beats three hours of rereading.
