FIU MAC 2311: Calculus I

What makes it hard
Calculus concepts are rarely the killer; algebra and trig under time pressure are. FIU's STEM pipeline pushes many students into 2311 with precalc gaps, and the exams expose them within weeks because every derivative problem is also a simplification problem. Working students face a second trap: this course assumes near-daily contact, and twice-a-week cramming visibly fails here.

It's one of FIU's principal STEM gatekeepers, and the DFW folklore is real, but the failure driver is weak algebra and trig under timed conditions, not the calculus itself. Students who patch precalc gaps early and practice daily pass at much higher rates.
Should I take precalculus before MAC 2311 at FIU?
If your placement is borderline, yes. MAC 1147 (Precalculus Algebra and Trigonometry) exists for exactly this. A semester of precalc costs far less than retaking calculus, and shaky trig is the single most common reason students retake 2311.
How many hours a week does MAC 2311 take?
Plan for the standard rule on a 4-credit course: eight to twelve hours outside class, spread across most days. The spread matters more than the total. Calculus skills decay fast between long gaps, which is what makes cramming so ineffective here.
